Unlike the University of Kentucky football team traveling to a bowl game, several Kentucky Elementary School Players notched some impressive victories and came home with some hardware from Nashville Tennessee at the 2016 National Chess Championships!

In the K-1 Championship Section, Brandeis sensation Vishwaa Kannan was the highest scoring Kentuckian tieing for an incredible 23rd place finish in the nation in a loaded field of over 300 players scoring 5.0 points over the weekend capping off an incredible season.

Also scoring 5.0 points with a super stong performance was Trevor Styer of Coleridge Taylor tieing for 32nd place in the massive 454 player Under 900 K-5 section.

Rosa Parks Elementary Trailblazing Chess Squadron tied for 20th (23rd on tiebreaks) in the Championship Division of K1, putting together 13 points as a team and surging into trophy consdieration with a huge two rounds on Sunday.  The Squadron was led by Daniel Fu (4.0), Sandyha Karthick (3.0), Alex Daum  (3.0), Kyle Yang (3.0), Evan Singleton (3.0), and Aditya Munish (3.0).

In what may have been the biggest breakout for a Kentucky school in the tournamnet...Maryville Elementary built on their state team success scoring 15.5 points and finished tied for 22nd (23rd on tie-breaks) in the monstrous 70 team K-5 under 900 section.  Coach Dennis had his kids and parents fired up and cheering for one another leading Maryville to an outstanding finish.  Maryville was led by Jaden Sanders (4.0), Ayden Bloomer (4.0), Baron Williams (4.0) and Wade Wilson (3.5).

Congratulations on all of the Kentucky players who endured the 2200 player event.  Special thanks to fellow Kentuckian Allan Priest for a stirring rendition of the National Anthem to kick off the tournament, and also special thanks to Amy Nunn, Larry Bell, and Jon Simmons for TDing at the event.  It's always great to see familiar faces representing the state so well.
